  • The Surly is intended for snow mostly, and to be used in races such as Iditabike. But it works very well on sand too.
Rims for snow bikes are extremely wide to give the widest possible footprint so as to not sink into soft surfaces.
The cutouts are there purely for weight saving reasons, and for their intended purpose are plenty strong enough.
Rims like this are not exactly new and are well proven. Punctures are also far less common due to the nature of the surface.
People tend not to take risks with their equipment when they're halfway through a thousand mile race in the middle of the Alaskan wildnerness at 4O below zero.

The tyres are designed to be run at very low pressures, also to help give a wider footprint and to allow them to deform over the terrain.

For people who live in areas that have snow all winter these kind of bikes allow them to carry on riding pretty much all year round.
They're also great fun on regular mtb courses too, and don't ride heavy like people always assume.

  • BRP - may be work reposting the pics of the Alaskan bag maker doing the run to the post office.

  • Having finished the road bike. I'm now thinking of putting one of these together. My plan is to cut the duties of the current winterbike/commuter/load carrier bike to pure utility duties. As I've already added front panniers etc.

I'd like to use the On-one alu frame ideally, and I'd like to run a hub gear (alfine 11?). I'd have the same bar set-up of midge bars with bar end shifter and Tektro RL520s. The big job will be adding studs to the outer knobs of an endomorph. It would be amazing to ride around locals trails, and will proper piss off the nordic skiiers I imagine.

Just mentioned it to Mrs Smallfurry, and she thinks its a good idea, as at least it'd get a lot a use in our nasty climate.

    Its on.

Eric Parsons! Now there is a guy who has had some adventures on a fat bike! :]

  • I'd like to use the On-one alu frame ideally,.

Might be worth looking at the aluminium 'fatbike' frame from Speedway cycles in Alaska...I seem to remember it being an ok price? Not as cheap as On-One obviously, but it's another option?

  • you could ride to france on that.

You could get tae france on that!

  • the moonlander looks exciting, i wonder if on one will mod their prototype fat bike to take the new bigger tyres?

@smallfurry it's almost a sin that you live in scandinavia, are into bikes and *don't *have a fat bike

    Brilliant googling now. Cheers!

The fatbike forum on MTBR is full of their Fatbacks.

Basically built the 29er instead. Wanted one for 'birkebeiner'. Cant say I'm regrete free TBH. But if its exceptable to have winter and summer road bikes. I can live with owning winter and summer off-roaders (I'll likely commute on the fatbike on the worse days). Plus the 29er is SS, and I could use some off-road gears TBH (was thinking of a full sus, but would'nt use it as much as a fatty).

  • dribble....

  • nice wheels

  • Sorry if this is dumb, i ride plenty of MTB but... where would this bike be intended for use?
Is it like some kind of Tibetan platue touring thing, a novelty non race XC breed or what?

I love it and would totally get a shot on it if at all possible. I just don't understand what its intended for Specifically.

    it's intended for morons.

  • it's intended for morons.

Interesting. What pray tell are the non-morons running for these conditions?

  • it's intended for morons.

    You got one yet?

  • Ha! Was about to post the same thing. :D

  • It's like saying wheelchairs are intended for twats or something.

    Mind bottling! ;]

  • Most of the folk I know think I'm a moron for cycling throughoout winter. These people probably havent seen how much more dangerous I am with skiis on my feet though.

That bike is a 9;zero;7 which offer well priced alu bikes/frames, with the clever offset rear end that Surly uses. The Fatbacks look alot nicer though, and are equally well priced. Plus I have a fetish towards non-dished wheels. So I'm looking at dropping my hub gear idea, and going 1x9 (34 : 11-34) with a 170mm rear hub, 135mm front. I've contacted Fatback about compatibility with 100mm rims....

...or I could get an offset 9;zero;7 and an alfine.....

    ....bugger...

I predict this bike to be finished spring 2013 (if there is one).

  • Hang on a minute.

I take it you could not ride across deep powder with these?

...and in that there pic^ could you not get away with a serious set of knobblies?

In which case, after you irradicate the 'novelty', jersey may have a point?

    Just sayin'

  • They are of very limited use but people will invent hypothetical non real world situations to justify having one because they look cool.

  • I agree the difference between my 2.55 29er tyres, and some 3.8 Larrys isnt going to be much on proper hardpack, or fluffy powder. But you should notice a difference in conditions inbetween these, were you'd get bogged down far less. I actually picked that photo intentionally. Classic foot deep semi pack ridge, with soft verges (real ankle twister, for winter trail runners). I'm guessing from the photo. But it looks to me to be a good example of where the fatbike shines.

I can niether confirm or deny this.

  • Not to say they shouldn't by the way, I mean we choose to ride track bikes in the street which is hardly ideal.

    this is a good point

  • The only thing I can think of is 'lateral stiffness'.

I have no excuse for 4 bikes.

  • Right there's loads of this sort of thing near me. Preped cross country skiing routes. They are'nt preped with a steam roller. If you step off your skiis you sink 10cm or something. Notice the guy is already sinking with 3.8's. This would be bloody hard work on a MTB. Believe me.
