  • Nice, but the pedals need chroming

  • Now I have nasty 'experianced MILF' metaphors going around my head.

I love the look of old school MTB's with horizontal top tubes and steel forks. Even the cheap rubbish which survives as beaters and commuters, make me turn my head. They seem to look so fun. Seeing the nicer examples on this thread is a joy too. But, given the chioce, I'd rather be on a mid range Focus or similar.

    Still, pretty though.

    excellent

  • ^ meh these proto mtb bikes are just boring to me, I think im too young (23) to appreciate them.

  • Old news?

  • gross news

  • Each to their own, an' all.

  • Hurray! for spare time :D.

I have loads of that stuff, it's awesome!

  • 2 years ago. Got to be pea. Pfff. Fuck it.

  • ^ perfect!!! ;)

  • Yes, I like Jambon's bike too

I'm 21 and I think I'd murder a man for a Klien Attitude with the colour-matching stem and all the gnarly period bits. I don't even ride mountain...

also, 'MTB Bike' is making my eye twitch. Mountain Bike Bike. Bike Bike. Bike Bike Bike.

Also, they are totally not 'proto'. Primitive by our standards, maybe, these days, but fully formed mountain bikes.

  • 'MTB bike' is annoying - but at least he didn't say 'mounting bike'

    that really gets my goat.

  • Don't all bikes have to be mounted ?

  • Mounted goat or mounting goat ?

We had a Klien Attitude at work today with decent component, it look beautiful.

I think it's great. Do you think he'd let me borrow it for.....a long time?

  • 3X is for pedos.

    FACT

  • what is Nikita Mikhalkov doing on London fixed gear and single speed forum?..

  • Having not riden a mid nineties mountain bike since, ooh, the mid nineties I could be talking rubbish here.

Is the ride really that bad compared to todays? Componentry being rubbish I can believe (even a lot of reviews at the time used to struggle to justify some of that kit above full shimano but, hey, it came in purple and obviously if Shimano hasn't evolved their kit in the last 20 years then that's going to be a bit odd).

In terms of the frame itself, presumably at least part of the thing that's leading people to believe that they don't ride so well is to do with different riding habits. Most of those bikes were built with pure xc racing and a little swoopy singletrack in mind - mountain biking is done on, and mountain bikers are used to, such 'bigger' terrain these days that it's not surprising that they don't cope as well - it's like comparing a road bike against a CX for riding through the mud.

In a test on their home ground I bet they wouldn't do too badly.

  • MTB components have changed dramatically. Entire paradigms have shifted. Number of useful gears for example, let alone the deraileurs. There isn't a part on the bike that isn't completely different from what was 15 years ago. A lot of the older stuff was so "wrong" that even if it is classic, well build and in perfect condition it's just hard to drool over.

second, regarding the frame comment: I said a few posts back that MTB porn from the 90's can really ONLY include [hardtail] frames and tires. But even with that, frames have changed dramatically to fit their intended purpose.

    just an opinion.

a close up of some arbitrary but nice parts:

  • jersey, have a butcher at this 80's Specialized MTB with modern component;

Can you explain how derailleurs have changed 'paradigms' in the last 15 years? Mechanically the principle behind them is the same as it was.

So I'd say your opinion was, essentially, worth shit.

  • Don't worry andy, they're Versace. Still probably made in Taiwan or China though :D
