There seems to be a lack of 'personality' in the bikes selected for this thread these days? ... or bikes that are just put together with good parts....
Pretty much sums up that steamroller. Great, it's rocking a thomson and a brooks, but it just doesn't look good.
This is a pornworthy steamroller:
That's nice, but with all that effort I think they should have thought about the cable routing and done something much better.

mdcc, why dont you see disc brakes on modern road bikes more frequently?
is it because of weight issues?1: weight
2: no compatible ergo/sti/doubletap levers for hydraulic brakes
3: banned by UCI
4: rarely necessary -

I couldn't disagree more Hugo, that first Steamroller has style for miles (great stance etc.), whereas the second looks Simon Cowell voice distinctly average

Not feeling the Royal Ache Cycles ^ looks like a total mash-up and not in a good way.

I just think it looks clean and smart. And by that I don't mean free from dirt.

...there are just all sorts of browns and blacks going on all over the place with nothing tying it together..
...I guess it doesn't help that I don't think those thomson stems look good, or those zen chainrings on non-oversized frames, or that brown tape and black hoods is a good idea...
But thats all personal preference. Obviously everyone can have their own opinion, but I'm just genuinely shocked as it seemed like a no-brainer to me.

4: rarely necessary1 and 2 are really the same, and there are plenty of cable operated disc options to begin with anyway. i couldn't care less about 3.
what gets me is number four. The power isn't useful (by necessary you really mean useful), but certainly the consistency is. i find that my road brakes are not wonderful in the wet, especially if it's winter and i haven't touched them in a few miles. I also find that brakes pad are a disgusting pain in the ass when used in wet climates. almost like a dog.
i'm sure they could come up with a reasonable disc set up for road. The greatest challenge wouldn't be the brakes themselves i suppose, because it's already done. Just scale the technology down to 1/2. It's making wheels, hubs, forks, and frames that also fit the bill without being too heavy.
it's unfortunate that road bike technology is really motivated by what will sell each year (more carbon, aero, colors, huge bottom bracket shells, etc), and not by what would actually be useful.
