i was wondering what that was about.. maybe those wheels can be used front and rear? because the spacing is different?
-
• #40753
I think it is the same spacing front and rear, so you can have a different gearing on the two wheels.
From the surly website
Fork: Suspension-corrected (100mm travel). 447mm axle to crown, tapered straight blade, 4130 CroMoly. 51mm IS REAR disc mount. 135mm-spaced dropouts, 17.5mm offset

Pugs have 135mm spacing front and rear so you can use normal MTB rear hubs at both ends.

Different gearings, geared/SS, spare rear on the front etc etc.

The front wheel can be used to ride fixed?
It's a bail out option in case your brakes and hub gear freeze up

Want that jacket!
But what is the gear stick on the down tube for? I don't see any derailleurs or gears? Am I being dim?
-
• #40766
It was a specially designed paint-switch. it's currently on red, if you push it forward, the frame goes blue. Obviously, red is the faster gear.

The Colnago Concept was a radical new idea that failed largely because it was too heavy. The bike was developed with help from Enzo Ferrari. Its various innovations included three spoke carbon wheels, hydraulic brakes, and of course the transmission. The transmission was contained just below the teeth of the chain ring. "The transmission was enclosed in a light alloy chain guard shaped to fit closely around the chain rings. From the outside the chain guard didn't rotate at the same speed as the pedal spindle as the gear ratios were obtained from a series of smaller cogs contained within the chain guard.

It was a micro water bottle. Despite holding 5000 litres of freeze-dried drinking water, they never caught on.

Those fat tyred atrocities really don't look like fun to ride to me. They look like they'd be fun to see, then to ride for the first minute, then a complete chore once you start to notice the weight of the wheels.
I have no experience with them of course, but are they better to ride on snow compared to a normal MTB tyre with really really low pressure?
