NikB is f-in fast, and he goes so fast by carefully trying all sorts of rather non-traditional things which suit him, such as in this case riding with an unusually slow cadence, typically about 65rpm. Here's his stats:

You can tell him his huge chainring is pointless when you've beaten these times.

That wasn't a 'test', it's how he rides all the time, having established through testing that it's what works best for him. Does it on 165mm cranks, too, which again is unusual, as slow revving testers usually favour long cranks. Look at the times; it seems to be working.
