cup and cone/loose bearing system not cartridge...but i don't know. picture is from EHBE... would looks much nicer with bladed and less spokes.

I've watched the stayer training sessions at HH and not actually noticed any verbal comms going on but thats probably beacause they are riding to a preplanned pattern. The noise they make is ungodly so i don't know how a race could actually be controlled by the riders. See fixing comment above.
About a year go I watched a live stream of a derny paced criterium which was absolutely insane; big fucking ring sprint lead out pace for an hour+ :D

i really don't see this ^ as a **competition, **but rather a way to spend time on a bicycle riding behind a motorcycle? they must not get enough exhausts in their own little cities, i dunno...

on that stayer shit, how do the pacers knows how fast to go?
they talk to each other, sometime use signal to go faster, slow down, etc.

Arnold in Koblenz imported / distributed Somec for a while.
That means: Roman rode races and meanwhile father sold goodies from the back of his car.
Nowadays, Arnold in Koblenz is better known as Canyon (sponsor Omega Pharma - Lotto team).
Maybe your bike belonged to a local racer equipped by the Arnolds. -
