he's not a retarded hipster - he's a framebuilder. It's not unusual to leave tubes long and trim later- whether he is clamping on it with the jig or undecided on the length as he's using a third party fork... But am sure he can cut a tube straight!
Can't wait to see the finished frame!

Why plus so many awesome points up a couple of posts? We already suspected this... and someone posted finished examples of bikes with headtubes left that long anyway. That's so many awesome points my head hurts.

Love how hipster is just thrown into any situation. I want to see it used by an MP. I want to see Boris deal it out in a TV interview on the news. Cuss some fool.

I know we're all wondering, but no explaination for the head tube? I've see extended headtubes but not like that.
seems like a terrible idea to cut it after putting all that work into it. what if something fucks up in the cut?
Max: totally agree. thats my kind of bike right there. love the straps TBH. Love the seat. love the stem. love the chainring.
i've seen al the parts before, and actually own some of them, but that comes together nicely.
makes me really want to strip the Waterford.
- If you leave the headtube long, it makes checking alignment much easier. A lot of head tubes are sold as 60cm lengths which means you can check alignment with the seattube pretty much by eye, if you're within 1mm at the end, then you'll be within about .2mm where it counts.
- It also allows you to clamp further away from where the brazing is going on, so the clamps don't get in the way, or take heat away. Cutting afterwards is pretty simple, no one is going to fuck it up.
- Probably.
(edit) 4. Those Sillgey bikes are ghastly and should never be held up as an example of anything except a really ugly bike (even if were designed for polo)

Like I said, don't spout till you taste it, they're fantastic little bike, if 20" wheel shopper bike are fun to ride, those are even better.

I asked before, and I'll ask again, where did you get to try one of these Ed? How was it etc...

didn't see that, sorry.
I've met a bloke with one in Soho and had a quick spin on it, it's quite a fun bike to ride if a bit twitchy (short wheelbase an' all) compare to regular 20" wheel bicycle like the Raleigh Twenty, it won't win prize for being ugly and silly looking.

Maybe it fits better in the frame building jig or alignment table.
Or easier to handle / clamp frame when fillet brazing.
Building with longer heat tube or seat tube is not uncommon, but not that long.
Doesn't make any difference for final result though.
Cutting a round tube is simple, especially with a cutting guide.
And, it has to be faced/milled anyway.
Seat tubes come in a standard length and have to be cut at the top side.
So, depending on the frame size, a few cm may protrude before cutting.
Personally, I always cut to the right length before brazing.
