  • i forgot to mention that this bike is a belt drive off road bike which is dumbass so i wouldn't own it myself

I run a belt-drive off road, and it works flawlessly. People imagine that small stones etc. can get caught inbetween belt and sprocket and cause the belt to hop off. But this just simply wont happen because...

    A) The belt, being grease free, doesnt pick anything up. Even when wet.
    B) Anthing small would be pushed through the holes in the sprocket anyway.
    C) The belt is bloody stiff laterally, and around 10mm thick. So it wont bend to slip off the side of the sprocket (unless you remove all tension from the belt, its near impossible to get off).

  • I thought quite a lot of off roaders were switching to belt drive?

That Bamboo bike if s a fucking mostrosity

    i'm a tool.

  • SO MANY issues would have put him below 20 minutes...

Given that the winning ride when I did the 21:29 was 20:45, I'm not sure that there was a minute and a half to be had from anything visible in the picture, certainly nothing that was available to UK amateur cyclists in 1991.

  • don't think many offroaders want to carry 2 lengths of belt to change gear for the course

Carrying a different belt is only necessary for large gear changes, for which you'd have to carry a (heavier) spare chain if using chain drive, so I don't imagine that's the issue.

very good point! i meant just links for changing length of chain - but monday morning silliness has stopped me from thinking - probably not an issue

just not sure how much belt drive will catch on in the offroad world - great for off the shelf city bikes which require low maintenance - fit and forget but i don't see any real advantage for any other kind of bike, is it lighter or heavier once you put on the funny chainring guards? and what about chainline? belt drives look pretty thick, there are enough chainline issues with normal setups but what about when you've got a guard on each side?

  • amazing.

I'd say off-road is were the belt will perform best (IMHO and stuff). Its a mega light set-up (there are'nt any chainring guards, just a lip on the beltring), and its performance is about the same as a perfectly clean and lubed chain, even after many shitty'n'wet miles.

Chainline is'nt really an issue, so much as beltring chainstay (beltstay?) clearance. But a little crimp in the chainstay solves that.

The main disadvantage is cost. I currently run 46:24, which I find gets me up tricky climbs, while being pretty quick on the flats. But I'd like to experiment with say 46:25/26. I'd also like to build an Afline geared extra rear wheel for versatility. Trouble is the sprockets are very expensive, not to mention the cost of a 'beltwhip'.

Apart from weight and quietness*, it dosent really offer much over chains TBH. But I like it, if only for it being little different to my other bikes.

(*the belt lasts longer than a chain, but cost much more so...meh.
the belt requires less maintainance than a chain, but I'm always fiddling with my bikes regardless so..again...meh)

(ED: Thats only a pic of a tiny bit of my bike. So not readers wives?)

  • How much more out of interest? You could easily spend £80 on a fixed drive train without thinking to much. Surely a beltwhip could be made out of an old belt no bother?

  • Methinks it's somewhat cheaper and easier to get an OTP belt drive bicycle, I fell in love with belt drive the moment I test ride a Trek District, in an idea world, I'd love to have a Brooklyn Machine Work Gangsta that's compatible with belt drive.

Velocio posted a price list from g-Boxx here: http://www.lfgss.com/post1240385-326.html

    Front 46t sprocket 91 Euro
    Rear 24t sprocket 57 Euro
    belt 118 knobs 55 Euro

So a drastic change of gearing (ie one that needs a new belt) would cost me 203 Euro.

Certainly true at the moment. I was lucky enough to get my gates system with my frame.

Really dont want to post it here TBH. White rims/cranks/contact points on a MTN? straight to anti-porn methinks ;)

(I've flipped the bars/stem scince those pics. So the bars are level with the saddle)

  • Nowhere near anti from where I'm sitting.

  • nope, lovely bicycle, my only gripe are those superstar logos were always too big and too yellow, i had that carbon post on my kinesis for a while and it looked really silly

    +1

I'm looking at sanding them off, and reclear coating TBH. Just a bit scared.

  • Hairdryer and credit card should do the trick if it's behind a clearcoat.

    Really?

I suspect they are laid on top of an already clear coated tube, with a extra layer of clear-coat over them (they are slightly raised)

  • Silly, silly position.
I hope its not his bike

  • It is his bike. What's wrong with the position? The saddle may be pretty far forward but that's it.

    Whats right with it?

    Are you serious? sit down.

  • His neck and wrists can feel funny...

  • Whats right with it?

    Ask him.
