They definitely are not. I've raced on one a few times and they are excellent.
I know quite a few people who have and love them. Modern Lefty's are light, stiff and offer great control.
Cedric Gracia used to race 4X on them back in his Cannondale days and he's an equipment perfectionist.
On a different note. This would keep those pesky mopeds away at the lights:

Re: flamethrower bike
Just don't try using it while riding fast - the flames would be in the turbulent wake from your body so there is a good chance they'll swirl back onto your back. Like pissing in a strong wind, the only safe way is to squirt out sideways into air that'll stay clear of your wake. -
