I would have though that it could be taken as read, particularly on this thread, that anything I say is simply a statement of my personal opinion.
Apart from DW being a prick; that's a statement of fact.
The Mercian has already prioritised aesthetics over function by being made from steel and having a quill stem, so a small increase in weight to accommodate a more aesthetically pleasing choice of seat post which does the job just as well as the Thomson would be entirely in keeping with the ethos of the build.
So in that case wouldn't you agree that, taking the crankset chosen already, a campy sp would have been the choice, and never a nitto, or a bloody kalloy!?

No, to be porn it must have both. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that the Mercian needs a zero offset post, the Easton EC90Zero is objectively better (by some measures, at least) than a Thomson, but it would be an even worse aesthetic choice. If you concede that there is a post which is objectively better than the Thomson, your proposition is that including such a post in this build, regardless of aesthetic considerations, would make it more porn.

steel frames or quill stems aren't inferior to more modern equivelents, just different
i choose steel over aluminum or carbon not for the look but the comfort of the ride, i can cover more miles on a steel bike in comfort, i.e faster than i have on my alu bikes
- quill stems aren't as stiff as ahead stems but they still function beautifully and you'd be a crazy person to dismiss the system as redundent. i personally hate that when i pack my bike up for travel and remove the stem/bars that my forks want to drop out the frame, that could be regarded as a design flaw no?
p.s my material of choice is ti as my name might suggest, not as aesthetically pleasing as fillet brazed steel or hydroformed alu but does it for me as far as function goes.
p.p.s. thomson seatpost looks whack on the mercian
p.p.p.s DW... will you never learn!? you don't do yourself any favours mate.

With that crankset, the matching C-Record post would be optimum, my point was not that Nitto or Kalloy would be best, just that either would be less bad than the Thomson.
As others have criticised the stem choice as well, it is agreed that a Cinelli is the only proper choice for a Campag equipped British bike, but it also seems from the set up that it could have had a Cinelli, notwithstanding the rarity of good 2As. A 1A, which is readily available, dropped right down, would give an almost identical position to the current angled stem which is pulled an inch up out of the steerer.

mind your tongue, sonny-Jim. NO need to get nasty.
DW
Dude, I have no personal beef with you, but seriously you need to stop posting your own work in the bike porn thread.
But if you persist on doing so, at least get one of them yellow stars behind your name.
Post your stuff somewhere else on the forum and if someone considers it porn, it will end up here anyway.
Thank you. -

the best option I think is to make a topic for Walker to post his 'project' bike, far easier to keep track of it and the like.

I think he should stop being a cheeky cunt and adhere to the same rules as everyone else

love everything on this bike

The Thomson seat post is more offensive than the stem. Even the Kalloy clone of the Nitto 626 would be an improvement, aesthetically.
you know i was reading the thread backwards, and thinking that you were being an idiot, However, the second I finally stumbled back on the photo I immediately thought the same thing you're arguing. That post really is hideous.

I'm really split on this one - how many frame makers/bike builders actually come on here and post their stuff? Seems like something we should be encouraging, but yes there is an arrogance in assuming your own stuff is porn, it is reader's wives, whatever reasons you defend it with.
But really I agree with Ed - start a DW thread. If it's judged porn then it goes in here organically. And yes stick something in Velocio's till for the free advertising.
