  • just a bit OTT!!

  • and lugs on an a-head stem, difficult to pull-off at the best of times,

  • wow i thought the bike was on fire then,

whats with the whole hot wheels thing?

  • this ones for you sb, when you gonna come out man?
see at the pub tonight mabey...m

    & cue Roberto…

  • slamm goldness from EAI

    & cue Roberto…

I got's me one of these, the gold is a ti-nitride coating which is super super hard, even compared to steel, this coupled with my K710SLGold chain from KMC, which is also ti-nitride coated means not only have I spent this years turkey money on bike parts but I have the hardest, smoothest, toughest drive chain in London and I will fight (and kill) anyone who attempts to challenge me for the title of 'London's hardest drive chain'

  • lol

  • slamm goldness from EAI

    & cue Roberto…

but what will it cost, Man? what will it cost!

boone are making me a titanium fixed cog which will be here in the new year as will my titanium chain, i already have a cycle dynamics titanium chainring.
now i don't know what the hardness figures for ti-nitride v's titanium are but one your flakey chav bling coating wears off my drivetrain will just be bedding in.

you want to kill me? i think pistols or swords? you should be aware i have very long arms and before pistols were banned in the u.k i was a decent pistol shooter.
hampstead heath, dawn new years day. i'll give you a good seeing to you will never forget once i unsheath my weapon.

  • My drivechain is hewn from a single diamond. I'll see to it that you both get a good funeral.

  • MrSmith now i don't know what the hardness figures for ti-nitride v's titanium are but one your flakey chav bling coating wears off my drivetrain will just be bedding in.

    Young's modulus of:

    Magnesium - 45
    Aluminum - 69
    Brass/Bronze -100
    Titanium - 115
Carbon Fibre reinforced plastic (50/50 fibre/matrix, unidirectional, along grain) - 150
    Steel - 200
    Silicon carbide - 450
    Tungsten carbide - 500
    Titanium Nitride - 650
    Single carbon nanotube - 1000
    Diamond ~ 1000-1200

'Bedding in' as we know is a euphemism for 'wearing out' ! ;P

Youngs modulus tells you nothing in this case, you need vickers hardness:

    Titanium: 0.97 GPa
    Titanium Nitride: 24.5 GPa

    So Ti will wear quicker.

Titanium is not a 'hard' material. Joe Bloggs usually doesn't make any distinction between tensile strength, fracture toughness, hardness and youngs modulus though and thinks Ti is better than anything else (except carbon, depending on who you're talking to). Not so - depends on the application innit ;)

  • fc9k Youngs modulus tells you nothing in this case, you need vickers hardness:

I was going to hunt down Vickers or Rockwell numbers but couldn't be bothered and I have Youngs modulus numbers on my hard drive, but I wouldn't say it tells us nothing as it says something about the behavior of ti-nitride v titanium under load - and we are talking about a drive chain.

But, yes, you are right it is not the best indicator of 'hardness'.

Harder than aluminium alloy and lighter than steel, which in the bicycle parts world is a reasonable compromise.

P.S those Boone Ti chain rings are very classy !

  • i was lying. i'm not getting a ti drivetrain :-)
although it's interesting about the hardness, will a ti-nitride coating last that long? is it only a few thousands of an inch thick thick?

the longest lasting chainrings i have ever used are stainless steel, been using a surly one on my ss mtb for 2 years and it's hardly worn.

  • Platini

Now that's the shit I'm talkin about!

  • Ten Grand....

  • And they try to palm you off with cheap arrospokk knockoffs?!

  • From the Washing Machine Post:

What can be deduced from the photo? well, it looks like campag components in the gear department with some stylish hoods covering the carbon levers, coupled (or not - can't see any cables at all, not even on the gear mechs) to carbon disc brakes. why we need discs (probably hydraulic) on a road bike is quite beyond me, while the closeness of the rear wheel to the seat tube/post would worry me greatly. still it is only a display prototype.

ironically, the bicycle was unveiled at the british racing drivers' club luncheon in london where beru were sponsoring the graham hill trophy. yes, and we'll now lose the cycling connection almost completely because the winner of the award was the almost ubiquitous lewis hamiltion - and belief comes perilously close to total suspension when you discover that, as part of his prize, lewis is going to receive one of these interesting machines.

surely, surely, if beru f1 systems are serious about presenting this to their target audience (i'm guessing it's well heeled cyclists) wouldn't it seem a frightfully good idea to give one to bradley wiggins or chris hoy on the run-up to the beijing olympics?

Lord Sheldon 'Christ' Brown says they longest wearing sprockets out there:

*"Most fixed-gear sprockets have beveled teeth, that is, slanted on the points to allow the chain to feed on without getting hung up on the edge of the tooth if the chainline is slighly imperfect, or if the chain is a bit loose and swaying from side to side as it feeds in from the bottom.
Despite this, they commonly run a bit noisy and rough when first installed, until they have become "broken in."

E.A.I.'s premium "Superstar" and super-premium "Gold Medal" sprockets have a unique, carefully engineered curve at the side of each tooth to make the chain feed smoothly and silently.

This is a very good thing, because these sprockets are hardened to a high degree, so if they needed to "wear in" it would take a loooooong time for that to happen. This is especially true of the "Gold Medal" model. The gold color is not actual gold, it's titanium nitride, a surface coating that reduces friction and is much harder than the hardest steel. These are the longest-wearing, smoothest-running sprockets money (a lot of money, I'm afraid!) can buy!

If only the best is good enough for you, this is it!"*

  • Wish EAI would sort out that godawful italic serif though.

  • i think it's fine. fine. the font is fine.

  • nimhbus i think it's fine. fine. the font is fine.
but you're a condor rider, so blingin it out is part of the course :p

  • perhaps so , sir, but it is the font that is in question, not the cog, and it can hardly be said to be 'bling'.

  • tynan "I have Youngs modulus numbers on my hard drive"

    Why?
