what I have always considered to be a good introduction to jazz for those who can't handle their music any more complex than the spice girls. Dave Brubeck was/is almost easy listening yet the sax solo in this song when played live is always sweet as. I love the fact that the dude on the sax (eugene wright?) looks like all our dads rolled together and i bet he was about 27 at the time (just noticed the rather understated roll of the hips). Brubeck looks like one of the thunderbirds in this particular clip. One thing i always loved about jazz was the way everyone in the band listens deeply to the others and gets caught up in listening to their mates playing great music. with people like charles mingus you'll get lots of vocal encouragement to boot but for these white dudes in suits it is strictly the odd nod of appreciation. However the intensity is the same. awesome.

apparently this woman could be intense. several reports of her diva behaviour especially in later life. Diva + senality = recipe for explosive performing
