  • That’s a beaut especially with the filleting. That price tho unless I’m missing something...

  • I think the model was not made in huge numbers and being over 60 years old is a factor, That said I think it's too high and think I've seen them previously sell between 500-600.

  • Ah yeah that'd make sense. Last thing I need to be buying mind but definitely a good bit of eye candy ;)! Cheers and hope you're well. T

  • All good T, Hope you're well also.

  • Advice needed guys:

I found a bike in the UK which I would love to buy. Unfortunately I am located in The Netherlands and the bike is pick up only. The seller is located near the ferry terminal of Newhaven. So I am considering taking the ferry from Dieppe, France to Newhaven. As far as I am aware I can travel through Belgium as long as I don't stay longer than 48 hours. France appears to be more difficult. From what I can find online I can enter France and leave it to the UK, but I am unclear what it takes to get back in again. To enter the UK you need a Covid test. To get back into France too, but I am sure these can be the same ones. From what I read online you can't travel freely in the UK right now. That said, I suppose I could persuade the seller to bring the bike to the ferry.

From what I can tell necessary travel seems to be a requirement. Although this obviously isn't, I wonder if there isn't a loophole through this. Or if anyone is actually going to check this. I could register a transport company just for the sake of buying the bike, but I am also hoping to avoid customs duties. That is why I would ideally like to pick up the bike and drive it across the pond. If anyone asks, I can just tell them I am traveling by bike. I suppose I could even bring a cheap bike to the UK and ditch/sell it, to avoid questions why I didn't bring a bike along to the UK in the first place.

To sum it up, this seems like a stupid/crazy idea, but also something of a challenge :)

  • ... must be a nice bike !

  • If the bike isn't too expensive and you have someone in the UK you trust, it might be easier to get someone here to hold it for you until travel is possible/sensible/permitted.

  • That would definitely be easier, but unfortunately I don't know anyone in the UK. I did ask the seller if you would be willing to hold on to the bike until it is okay to travel again, but he needs to clear the space.

  • From what I can tell necessary travel seems to be a requirement. Although this obviously isn't

I think the question isn't 'how' but 'should I'. All the restrictions are there for a reason. Apologies for being blunt but stuff like this is only going to prolong the very unappealing situation we find ourselves in.

I say all this as someone in a similar situation. Live in NL, bought a bike from here in August, seller dropped it at my parents house in Manchester. Now have to wait until it can be brought over in person to avoid import duties.

  • you could ask a bike shop local to him if they'd be willing to pack and ship it to you for a fee? then he can just deliver it to the bike shop. I did this with a frame from the US, but might have just got lucky with the bike shop in question.

  • Gah, no doubt it's something epic.

I need to collect a storage unit of stuff from Den Haag and bring it back to the UK, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon otherwise i would have offered to help out. Though Newhaven isn't particularly close either.

Arrange a courier for the seller and suck up any customs? Likely cheaper than the petrol and ferry and covid tests anyway.

  • Try the Brighton locality page? You may find a helpful forumenger

  • To me this doesn't feel right. When you would have a courier bring the stuff back the UK, that is okay, but if you do it yourself it isn't...

It probably isn't the kind of epic you are thinking: its a Surly Big Dummy :). The sheer size of the thing makes it pretty much impossible to ship.

  • To me this doesn't feel right.

You want to ignore travel restrictions in the UK, France, the Netherlands and possible Belgium as well, during a pandemic. On top of that you want to evade import duties, and want advice on finding a loophole. How unfair that you cannot just do what you want!

  • Okay, point taken.

  • @SWijland I'd say your best option would be to persuade (booze/money/parts/charm) a forum member to do the UK end of the courier faff for you. Or pay a bike shop to do this. Then courier it.

If it helps, in 2013 I had a bike shop package up a bike for me, they charged £40 for a road bike.

Getting a courier quote for this might be difficult! Do Paisley Freight take international bookings?

  • I want to hear how the Dutch pronounce that brand! :D
