Just saw that Tommasini that sold. I didn't realise when I looked at the ad but I have dealt with him before. I was looking for some rims last year and he offered to bring them to London as he was driving over at Xmas to see some family in London, so I didn't have to pay delivery from the Netherlands. Also bought a derailleur of him the same day my gf bought me one as a surprise and he cancelled it for me and gave me a refund. He's a real nice guy. Still don't know though what was going on with that Tommasini though.

Honestly I think he didn't know or wasn't sure. If he was trying to deceive anybody, he wouldn't have included the picture of the bottom bracket. There's a good chance the buyer will be super happy with his purchase, it's unlikely that anybody on the street will ever doubt the bike's provenance as the only clue is only visible from the underside of the bb. That being said, I'm 99,9% sure that tommasini wouldn't have made a bottom bracket like that. If they had ordered it from chierci (which I don't believe) I don't think they would have cut their own logo in there in such a crude way.

Why are you so sure it's a fake?
Using other manufacturers' BBs is hardly uncommon, and in this case he mentions that the tubes aren't rounded, which might explain using a different one.

• #55416
Because of the way they cut the T-logo in there right in the middle of the chierici font. It just looks wrong considering that all Tommasini's I have seen so far are true works of art with a lot of attention to detail. You're right, I don't have any hard proof for my subjective feeling of it being a fake abd I'm not an expert so the 99,9% statement is actually bullshit. Having said that, I would bet a considerable amount of money on it being a fake with a real tomm fork. All it takes is a dremel and some pantographing skills basically.
p.s. the tubes look round where they meet the lugs. + tomm used ms/max/el os tubes so they had a considerable amount of expertise in that field. + Most tomms had tommasini engraved dropouts afaik.
but again, it all comes down to a subjective feeling :) -

I find the decals the worst part.
-
• #55418
It's probably a respray but the frame itself is absolutely Tommasini
-
• #55419
Why is that? Have you seen any other tommasinis with crude BBs like that? Which model is it? I'm genuinely interested, not merely trying to defend my point :)
p.s.
the easiest way to settle this would probably be to contact tommasini directly. -

"early 1950's, Carlton Flyer 2, all original parts, amazing decretive frame work on every bracket"
And on the subject of carltons. This one looks like it might have had a little front on collision.

It's a perfect Tommasini T on the bb. Not crude in the least. The lugs have the Tommasini style cutouts.
Original Air forks. Correct Tommasini panto on the seat stay caps. Check out the brake bridge too. Kosher. All as you would expect from say a Prestige/Super Prestige late 80s. But if profiled tubes then a more special model. Not sure which. The paint is like the resprays you see from restorers who don't do bikes very often. -
• #55423
You're definitely more of an expert than me since you probably sold houndreds of frames over the years so normally I'd take your word for it. But I can't change the fact that I still feel like it's a fake. The headtube badge looks nothing like the one on normal Tommasinis for example. I sent them an email equiring about the frame and whether they used chierici BBs, until then I'll try not to hijack this thread any longer :)

Oh, must have missed that. You're right, it's probably better to let this go :) It's a special bike in any case either because it's one of the best tommasini fakes or because it's one of the ugliest genuine tommasinis ;)
