No, it's a crappy 'Sears' bike.
Thought something was off. I used a few other pics as reference (resemblance, lugs, stays) but what gave it away?

Nope - supermarket Merckx, made by Falcon and sold, as a complete bike, for about £75 in the late 1970s (I know, I had one as a kid).

The rear dropouts are cheap old fashioned ones, geometry is very squat.
Also lamp bracket and mudguard/rack eyes are a dead giveaway that it's not a 'racing' frame.
No indication of tubing would suggest gaspipe, probably weighs a tonne. -

As well as the real deal, EM licenced Falcon to churn a whole world of shit bikes.
Clumpy light bracket on the fork and mudguard braze-ons, doesn't scream "racing pedigree".
It all depends on what your expectations are and what you intend to use it for, as to whether it's woith it: £45 is cock-all for a serviceable frameset.

Whoa, thank you for the information. Expectations are mixed. I just have a sudden itch for another bike/ more refined steed which I totally can't afford that I can't seem to explain.
Learn something everyday, i'll keep my peepers peeled.

I don't think you'd be the first person to see 'Merckx' and think you've found a bargain, there is a market for frames like this.
If you're after something cheap then do what I do and set up saved searches for 'include description' (531, 531c, 653, 753, 631, 853, 953) and also (slx, sl, tsx, columbus) etc etc. Sometimes you just have to be lucky though (put stuff in brackets like that, separated by commas and it'll search for all of them).
I had a huge drought recently where I didn't find anything but for sub £80 I've had in the past - an 853 frame, a handbuilt SLX frame, multiple 531c, 653 and 753 frames, a couple of Bob Jacksons, and other ridiculously badly listed awesome frames.Just keep an eye out, sometimes things slip under the radar and you spot it!

This site is a great resource for those delving into the world of old steel bikes.

Perfect! Been spending an unhealthy amount of time on useless keyword searches that somehow lead to the ebay underbelly. Patience has served me well so far, so I can wait! Thank you man, really appreciate the pointers. Gonna be a shifty weekend for my wallet!

I've had to really control my spending on the bay. I think my missus is starting to suspect something when every second week I'm coming home with a new frame/bike. My excuse of storing them at friends who are then returning them is starting to wear thin ;)
