hi ackers. Well, i still have my colnago sport and i ride is all the time, it is a very good ride. In the three years since i started this thread i have found out a couple of things about the colnago sport. A bike collector here in toronto told me that he'd understood that colnago contracted benotto to make bikes for them in mexico. Colnago was having a hard time keeping up with demand for their bikes due to their shop being small and, back then, the world was a lot smaller too so shipping to the north american market wasn't as easy as it is today. Unless you are in mexico, of course.

It is well-known that benotto made other bikes for other companies in mexico, so i don't see this idea as being too far-fetched.

I cannot tell you how valuable it is, that all depends on the market you are in. There was an ebay auction for one about a year ago and it hit $350 or so but then there was another ebay auction within the past 6 months where one sold for under $200----admittedly, the more recent one had terrible photos and description.

The bike is made of columbus aelle tubing which isn't the greatest offering from columbus but it is far from the worst, i like the way mine handles a lot. The geometry is very tight and race-like, i have no doubt that it is the same geometry as one of the higher-end colnago racing bikes, maybe a special, it is hard to tell.

So, for the record, i would say that it is an authentic colnago-designed bike built by another very good cycling company, possibly in mexico, made out of mid-range italian steel. See? It is as clear as mud ;)

    fyi

edit: just in case anyone was currious I managed to gather all this info via a google search ;)

  • am i right to be suspicious? and are there any german speakers who could translate?

suspicious about what? the potted plant lurking in the background or the wood flooring?

  • suspicious about whether it was actually made by colnago and from hugo7's (cheeers for the translation) post it was made by benotto though yes, on a second viewing that pot plant does look a bit sketch

  • still £125 for a benotto frame from Alle tubing in your size that has colnago written all over it sounds like a good deal to me....if it's your size and you want a road bike. Plus UK shipping is only ~£27.

I always look at the features on frame if I'm not sure about it...

...dropouts, lugs, chrome, brasing, etc. If time and money has been spend on all the little bits then its unlikely to be a heep of shit...IMO
