  • have a pair of secondhand ambrosio excellence rims in red, now does anyone know where I can get a new pair of these rims. As all my google searches seem to bring them up in silver or black, not the required red. Also need them 32H. If I can't get those am seriously thinking of getting some DT Swiss 1.2's though I could be tempted by the 1.1's

  • kowalski Time flies you can't they fly too fast.

You can't ride deep Vs for fashion victim who rides them.

  • docus ^^^ I run Velocity Aeroheads (laced to Miche track hubs). They're lighter than Deep Vs, and I think they strike a good weight-to-strength balance. Decent build quality, and a little more understated (aesthetically) than Deep Vs. I like them.

cool - well I'll look out for them at this 'run chain stock' place as soon as i find
some low flange track hubs - i predict that 'low' will be the new 'high' :)

  • I'm off work this week so I'm pimpin' up my Mercian instead of doing other more useful stuff...
My old Sugino cranks now look ber-ling but I'm having a bit of trouble with the rims... They're anodised and I can't get the matt coating off with chrome paste (Autosol), so guessin' I'm gonna have to get a bit more physical wiv 'em...
Should I just use a few grades of wet and dry? I'm not after a total mirror finish, just nice and shiny and chrome-y...
It's ages since my metalwork days so I'm a bit clueless... Flatmate reckons I should get a wire brush on them but that sounds a bit OTT...
    Thoughts? Thanks in advance...
    Joe :D

  • caustic soda!

  • dogsballs caustic soda!

    Yep yep!

  • then use steel wool or finer/finer sandpaper, then autosol!!

  • Oven cleaner then wet/dry then Autosol

    Shiny shiny

  • adoubletap Oven cleaner then wet/dry then Autosol
    Shiny shiny

Yeah, I used that thread as my 'how to' guide, did a whole bloody can on the rims! Eff all happened! Probably cuz I went straight to the Autosol, what does the oven cleaner actually do? If I hit it again is it all likely to come off?

    dogsballs caustic soda!

The wheels are already built so bit worried about using caustic soda and damaging spokes etc., what's the procedure anyways?
And BTW ta very much, this is tomorrow's project... :)

  • The oven cleaner should be wrecking the aluminium oxide layer created by the anodising process over the raw aluminium. The oxide is what holds the dye for colours or is left naked for matt anodising. Then you're polishing the raw alu and waiting for it to oxidise on its own.

  • Ah, I see! Will wreck with more oven cleaner before mashin' with abrasives... Cheers chaps... :)

  • You must use the correct type of oven cleaner or else it will not work (basically one that says "do not use on aluminium surfaces").

    One moment let me check . . . .

  • The oven cleaner must contain Soduim Hydroxide.

Read thread below, safety issues: (don't screw your lungs up on the fumes)

  • Roger Wilco, had all my shit out in the garden today... Used Mr Muscle oven cleaner so maybe no active ingredient? Nice one! :)

    Mr Muscle™ = no good !

    Kleen Off™ = good !

When I de anodize aluminium and shine I usually just go for 240 grit sand paper then to polish go progressively 400 - 800 - 1600 . . . . etc etc - then give it a good polish with Brasso™ - it gives you a pretty decent mirror finish - then seal with a clear coat.

  • Caustic soda is much stronger and is basically just sodium hydroxide. it's loads cheaper than oven cleaner and there's no spraycans involved.

  • eco-friendly chemical stripping! YES!!!!

  • And I've only just got back from buyin' the bloody Kleen-Off! Flippin' 'eck!!
Cheers for the tips, I'm off to strip dem rims!

  • trampsparadise eco-friendly chemical stripping! YES!!!!

    10 points.

  • It isn't working with the Kleen-Off, I've applied it twice and the matt anodised layer's still bloody there!!! The rims just look a bit shit now...
They're made of 6061-T6 alloy which is aluminum with magnesium and silicon as the alloying elements, shouldn't make any diff should it?
I know the shine's under there cuz my brake's worn the silk finish away on the front rim... Wet and dry? :(
    HELP!!!!

  • once the anodise has come off, just start with fine steel wool and paper, then autosol to fine shine.

  • teenslain It isn't working with the Kleen-Off, I've applied it twice and the matt anodised layer's still bloody there!!!

How long did you leave the Kleen-Off on the rims ?

teenslain The rims just look a bit shit now...

They will look shit at first, a big smeary mess, you gotta fight your way through this stage, beer helps, sandpaper/steel wool also.

  • I hear ya, was lookin' for a quick fix... Just been to Halfords and picked up some wet & dry...
Beer in hand, time to get down and dirty... :)

  • autosol is king, i took to the cannondale track frame i bought off RickyMundo with autosol last night, and now it's as shiny as phil wood hubs!!!

  • Still being a bugger, so popped out and got some caustic soda...
Just whacked it on, how long should I leave it before rinsing?
