That's an interesting design flaw. I guess one large strap can't withstand repeat pull forces. I wonder if the shoe improves with multiple straps. I know this makes it look more like a kids shoe (I frikking love velcro), but for the sake of convenience I imagine people can't really complain.
Combination of lower velcro and upper laces would just be a hassle.
The Milltags Morgan mentioned up there were the nicest casuals I'd seen so far. Shame it's been yonks since we heard any updates.
