  • How was it?
Had to work, but saw MM, and possibly lucyh in quick succession riding along Coldharbour lane. Hi :)

It was great! Interesting, creative, vibrant, tasty, unpretentious, reasonably priced and not rammed first thing. But enough about the company, the food was good too. ;) Love their house dressing. Nice coffee too.

Would be even better if they offered vegan options for the sweet galettes though such as vegan cream, yoghurt or ice cream.

We then checked out the Blue Turtle cafe on Coldharbour Lane which was preferable to squeezing in to a rammed Federation.

Thanks for suggesting this itsbruce. Lovely to meet you Lucy.

  • Woke up with a really bad headache this morning so I won't be attending. Sorry guys, enjoy!

    Hope you're feeling better now!

    .

To clarify: they happily offered vegan versions of the sweet galettes; if they hadn't, Lucy's plate would have been bare. It's just they removed non-vegan ingredients rather than adding substitutes.

  • Hope you're feeling better now!

Thank you MM! Feeling much better now :-)

  • Mexican forumengers?

    http://fatgayvegan.com/2014/02/23/los-loosers-mexico/

*Los Loosers *is as simple as it is staggeringly-impressive. People make vegan food. People bag up vegan food. People deliver vegan food via fixed gear bicycle. In all of my travels in search of stomach satisfaction, I have rarely been so delighted, charmed and fulfilled by a food provider.

    Hehe.

  • Do you think they mean 'loosers' or 'losers'?

    What is a looser?

Either way, cheap, bicycle delivered, vegan Mexican snack food sounds like an excellent idea. Brownie points for their innovative use of social media.

    Mmmm, brownies.

  • Not hard at all. Injera don't have dairy in them (and teff is very nutritious) and they have a wide range of spicy vegetarian dishes, most of which are vegan and the others are usually also available as vegan variants. They do a lot of religious fasting there, so the non-meat cuisine is extensive :)

...particularly if you land just as their 55 days of pre-Easter fasting begins. This place is many kinds of awesome...

if this person was blonde, wearing a lot of black, looking a bit dishevelled and riding a stripped beater it was almost definitely me. hi :)

moar hangs soon plz! i had a great time on sunday (lovely to meet you MM and itsbruce!) - sorry to miss you and hotdogs jamie. do you know if TMF are doing any more pop ups soon (do they have some sort of residency at truman brewery now? they seem to be there a lot)

i was really happy with my crepe experience (the waitress was helpful and more than happy to accommodate my requests) would nom again. we also dicussed the thai place just at the entrance to brixton village which is busy but the food is still excellent. i'll travel anywhere though - still haven't tried tatreez!

  • Let's do Tatreez as the next 'hang', then. :)

    #tryingmyhardesttolearnyootspeak

I'd be up for it again tomorrow before Easts, but I'd gladly go back there any time. Anyone for tomorrow?

  • Yoga tomorrow. Do you deliver to E&C, Oliver?

    ;)

  • You know what, if they did takeaways I could probably do that, but it would be much nicer if you lot came North Of The River. Maybe I'll give Rebecca a call, I'm sure she'd love Tatreez.

Anyway, tonight doesn't seem like a goer. Does anyone want to suggest another day? I could do Friday.

  • I took my friends to Manna in Primrose Hill yesterday as a thank you for cat sitting. As a non vegan I was a little shocked at the prices (it is not cheap with starters and desserts at around £8 and mains at £14). The food was quite good but nothing mind blowing. The highlight for me was the peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake.

  • Id be well up for Tatreez this week, or next week or whenever really.
We also really need to do another pizza meet up!

Just FYI, I'm a really good cat sitter ;)

ha is that an offer for next time? They earnt it, they had him for 3 weeks while I swanned around in Thailand and my cat is a monster and usually pulls a dirty protest on the bed if he feels wronged.

What are the key sources of protein for vegans?

I am told soy is bad for men so tofu and tempeh are out. I am trying to eat less gluten so i think that rules out seitan? which means I am left with nuts, seeds, lentils and protein supplements. Does anyone have any other ideas?

  • ^ this.

  • That is good stuff thanks. how do you sprout chickpeas and things and why are they are better?

  • You can also save on fuel.

    what does this mean??

does it work with tinned ones? this is a good tip thanks

  • Edamame beans are great; I just eat them from the pod.

Edamame is soy beans, just so you know. Although the whole soy = emasculating poison is quite unproven.

  • what does this mean??

It means you don't have to cook them because the sprouting process has softened them and removed the harmful substances you find in some seeds and beans.

does it work with tinned ones?

No, because they are cooked as part of the canning process.

  • But jv specifically asked for non-soy protein sources.

jv, don't go anywhere near "raw" vegan if you want to avoid soy. 3 in 4 recipes seem to use tamari or shoyu sauce as a sneaky way to add the complex flavours which raw food otherwise lacks. Of course, soy sauce is hardly raw...

  • I had in mind if he was buying raw vegan food products.

  • Edamame is soy beans, just so you know. Although the whole soy = emasculating poison is quite unproven.

This. Almost everything in excess can be harmful so don't believe the anti-soya hype!

  • We had a bake sale at our workplace today so I made a vegan/gluten free cake. I adapted the cherry bakewell cupcake recipe from Ms Cupcake's cookbook. Was meant to be three layers but I ran out of sugar but two were plenty enough!

That looks lush. Can you please share the recipe? I'd like to make it when my vegan buddy comes for tea.

  • I'm going vegan for the month of March with a house mate. Are reasons are different as his is to test for cardiorespiratory improvements while I might make it permanent for Karmic reasons.

I'd appreciate suggestions for vegan friendly coffee shops. I don't mean soy milk lattes as I'm a black coffee, no sugar guy. But, I do like me some cake.

    • nude espresso in soho square do a few vegan treats - try the peanut butter cookies (#biased)

    • milk bar on bateman street used to do the most bonkers vegan french toast (excellent for sunday mornings) but since the ownership changed i think this place has 1) gone down the pan and 2) they may not offer this any more - give it a shot though. (#biased) (i also have their vegan french toast recipe if you want it and i made it last week if you want a picture)

    • if you're in brixton go to ms cupcake for a cookie/cake/anything and then toddle over to federation coffee or blue turtle oasis (i think federation do one vegan thing, possibly, but ms cupcake is better) (#exceptionallybiased)

    • if you're in hackney, e5 bakehouse use nude espr beans and have some vegan cake/cookie options (#biased) and happy kitchen up the road (vegan bakery) might still be open

    • there's a turkish delight/chocolate shop just round the corner from kinono/daily goods some of whose truffles are accidentally vegan. i'm definitely guilty of getting some truffles and going round to daily goods for a coffee (xsvcx and i did it recently haha)

i'm hardly au fait with every single coffee shop in london's vegan options (i'd happily expand my knowledge through praxis though if anyone wants to make a regular thing of it!) but tell me which coffee shops you normally go to/which area you're based in and i'm sure i can help >^.^<
