How much is the excess? Cost out smart repairs when selling.
-
• #18953
I doubt we'll sell it, honestly. Just keep running it until it croaks.
-
• #18954
In that case, worry about it if it falls off or touches the road or the tyre.
Make parking a contact sport.

I think they were probably quite tempted- the Celica looked pretty good at first, but the deeper they dug, the more it turned into a total horror-story.
-
• #18961
Imagine going through all that bespoke body work and restoration, and when you have finished you still only end up with an old Celica.

• #18962
Albeit a very very fast one.

i am currently sorting out bits for the mg, to send the block/crank/etc off to the machine shop. whilst the internet is an amazing resource, the problem with the mgb is that because there is so many of them, there are also half a million different opinions on what works.
the clutch, for example. i am going for a 60 thou overbore, a pretty big cam and a fair bit of head work. aiming for a 100hp at the rear wheels (not massive, i know, but 40% up on standard). you would think that there would be a consensus on the clutch required, but no - people recommend hd clutches (basically a sherpa clutch - £80), but some say these eat throwout bearings. others recommend performance clutches (£300+) and others are adamant that the standard can handle the power. it is a real pain in the arse. it all comes down to who you talk to.
the easy option would be to stump up for the performance job and i have not skimped on anything so far, but spending three tines the amount on something if i don't need it really starts to ramp up the cost of the rebuild.
i don't know. just a rant really. I want to rebuild the engine myself, and i wwant to rebuild something strong and tight, but nothing that is too much of an animal when i want to drive it on the road. the idea was to have this as a weekend car and then build up a 2002 over time to hammer on the track. the way this is going, i might need to abandon that for a while to finish this...

Can you find someone who has the specification which you want, and ask them what they have tried and now use?
-
• #18966
i am going to hold off until silverstone in a couple of weeks and ask some of the guys that have a 'track day' set up. there will still be a million different opinions!
i am thinking about it all too much

My R clutch works well, and would hold your power.
Happy to help.

Thanks dammit. The next few evenings of reading/drooling has been sorted. The 6r4 is more agricultural than I initially thought

Simple but effective, I really like it- that engine went into one of my ex-girlfriends fathers LMP-2 car, which was quite easily the fastest (wheeled) thing I've ever been in.

That little Caterham looks awesome (on TG)

I'm only at #86 and I'm already amazed at the fabrication.
Have we had this in here before?:
Project Binky - Episode 1 - Austin Mini GT-Four - Turbo Charged 4WD Mini - YouTube
Project Binky - Episode 2 - Austin Mini GT-Four - Turbo Charged 4WD Mini - YouTube
Project Binky - Episode 3 - Austin Mini GT-Four - Turbo Charged 4WD Mini - YouTube
Project Binky - Episode 4 - Austin Mini GT-Four - Turbo Charged 4WD Mini - YouTube
The 4 episodes add up to about 1:20 so it's maybe best for after work but it's seriously impressive. Not finished yet so I guarantee you'll be left cursing however long it might be until the next episode.

I think we'll leave it. It's a small city car, and bumpers are there for bumps...
