The route from Camberwell to Walworth is a nightmare. They've given up fixing the holes and have now just plonked up warning signs to buses that just say POTHOLE.

Coming from Shaftesbury avenue heading SW. ITS HUGE and could be on the middle of the junction.
Leave lots of space behind the car in front on this junction.
Ouch. -

Take a photo of it, report it and get the council to pay for the damage.

Thanks guys,
Also thanks to the 2 cyclists who helped me and my bike out of the road
Miraculously no damage to the Dave Marsh
My face took the brunt :-/ -

Oh Shit. That's awful. Glad the Dave Marsh is OK.
TfL website is the best place to report road defects. It means the authority concerned are contacted by them, and TfL are duty bound to ensure it's fixed. Or so I'm told.

Surely something big will have been reported before, which could mean the authority have to fix any 'damage' to the Dave Marsh? Just a thought...

Reported another large sunken drain on Old St.

You mean upgrade the bike by ripping-off the council so they have less cash to fix holes with? Sounds legit.
-
• #338
ah sweet i'm heading that way later

Gaz, of course I mean claim for legitimate damage, as it's not always immediately obvious after a crash. But I acknowledge I was being slightly mischievous in my communication, yes.
As far as I can see, the usual council attempt to 'fix' these holes involves the approach of dobbing a small lump of tarmac into the rough hole and crudely tamping it down, leaving a raised bump in the road, before waiting for the next rain/frost to penetrate the edges causing them to crumble, giving a bigger problem in a few months time. Either that or they ignore the problem and hope it goes away.
(Of course, we all know the root cause has been almost criminal underinvestment in public infrastructure for decades, because roads aren't vote-winners [climbs off soap box])

If the roads were safe in the first place, this kind of thing wouldn't happen.

Pothole cost £75 on average to repair.
Incident cost more.
Thus, it would be cheaper if the council spend more time repairing them.

Well, yes... but roads don't last forever and can't always be fixed immediately.
I still don't think it was a cool implication putting inverted commas around 'repairs' like that.
If it's for legitimate repairs then fine, but if it's for 'repairs' then that's basically everyone's council tax paying for a bike that doesn't need fixing.
Anyway, the post has gone now so that's good. -

Maybe if the vehicle repairs outstripped the road repairs the bean counters might get the brainwave to make the roads more durable in the first place.
-

As an aside, Southwark Council has recently taken the time to put speed bumps in the parking spaces all along Loughborough Road. If anyone's in the area they should go have a look - it's a really top job.

• #345
Didn't see the commas, fair enough.

Don't think it work.
Dubious source said £1.7 billion a year on vehicle repairs (2014).
BBC source said £90 million a year on road repairs (2012)
Not very conclusive, but you get the gist.
-
• #347
jeez, that's quite a difference.
-
• #348
Imagine the savings if they'd invested in the roads before they were shitted.

Very eye-opening stats Ed - one heck of a gulf there. Even allowing for sampling errors, etc., it seems pretty damning. Obviously the old saying 'prevention is better than cure' rings true in this instance.
Apologies to all for consternation caused by inverted commas around 'damage'. I shall take heed that any element of sarcasm/poking fun should be phrased better in future. I will make it clear here that I do not advocate or advise making false claims and I agree, in hindsight, it was not cool.

ROAD NAME: A5201, Old Street
LOCATION DESCRIPTION:West-bound bus lane, before Bunhill Row
Fixed.
Yeah, I'm not sure. There's some roads around us that were totally fine and have been resurfaced and then there's main roads elsewhere that are fucked and are just left to rot.
