My experience of mass start RACES is limited, but both the marathon, and the park-runs that I have done have been amusing.
Every time I ran the Richmond parkrun seriously I was top 10 (top 5 all bar one I think?), and yet all the people would push to the front.
(Obviously I don't expect people to not do that just because I'm there, more just the miss-match between start position and finish position).
The sprinting and jostling for position on the heal of the pace runner for the marathon in the first mile was mindboggling.
I genuinely think most people had forgotten that there were another 25 miles afterwards in which to get to your own pace.
TL:DR I have less sharp elbows than most people
I think this is a london thing. When I first got here I was shocked at the 'must get to the front'-ness of the jimmy joggers. It's like london's nodders....
