I "invented" a tuning recently. Got a song coming along in it. It's basically open D so:
DAGF# but then you leave the top two strings as normal B and E. It's really easy to make a big booming open D sound and fuck about with little riffs on the top two strings and when you barre all the strings (barre ALL the strings!) at the 5th fret for the 4 you get this weirdly retro-jazzy major 6th sounding things going on which immediately puts me in mind of M. Ward channeling Merle Travis. Figured out a couple of simple fingerings for the 5 and 6m and I'm away.Hey nice tip Dooks
Get what you mean esp the bar on 5th fret -

Thanks David, 'appreciate it.
Has anyone got any tips for travel guitars? I'm going on two trips this spring/summer and one with the in-laws. Going to need something too keep me distracted. Budget (as always) is a consideration.

Take a ukulele?
If you have an iPad, GarageBand is great for holiday time musical noodling. -
• #2667
uke is my last resort. haz ipad but it's gotta have strings. and much as i'm sure my inlaws are going to be off the christmas card list by day two, I cant in god conscience inflict banjo on them for a week.

Mandolin. Serious suggestion. Normal uke's just sound pants (but ok if you main thing is singing)
Mandolin is an extremely compact yet sonically rich lead instrument. But much more mellow than a banjo.
If it has to be a guitar for electric just grab a tele/strat and unbolt the neck, for acoustic the very obvious baby taylor.

Can anyone recommend a decent EQ pedal? I've started running a baritone through a bass amp, the low end sounds amazing but the lighter strings are really lacking any sort of brightness...thought an EQ pedal could be the way to go?
Dooks, my mate used to use a Hohner headless guitar to travel with, not my cup of tea but it was pretty small for a full size guitar!

Not taking a mandolin or a friggin' steinberg stick! Guess I should have been clearer. Looking at affordable travel sized acoustic guitars. Cheaper than baby Taylors and less stick-esque than the hideous Martin backpacker. I will continue the research.
^^I used to have a boss EQ pedal, GE7 (or possibly earlier variant) I used to roll off some low end for playing a high register melody on bass during a song's intro. Was very handy.
If Boss make it, you can bet Digitech do one for half the price and Behringer do one in plastic for £15.

Just pick up a cheap parlour-size guitar from ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301102205651?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

fucking ukuleles. anyone that plays / owns one of these fucking things should be held personally responsible for the explosion of cutesy, whimsical vom-inducing cunting cover versions of otherwise perfectly serviceable songs and the fashion for jizzing said songs over every advert on telly selling anything from tampons to big macs.
fuck the fuck off with your elves guitar.

Little, itsy-bitsy parlour guitar? You'll probably wind up spunking a fortune on it once you get a decent case to carry it in....
-
• #2674
^^^That's actually not a bad idea generally but I think i need it to be even smaller. Like,fit-in-a-suitcase small.
Was hoping for any real word write up for this sort of shiz: http://uniqueguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/acoustic-travel-guitars-part-1.html

^^^ you must spread rep etc
Celluloid or summink wasn't it? I dunno, it may not be as good as ye olden days but I ain't changing shit! Riling cork-sniffing aficionados can only be a bonus.
