  • Is that like a white russian?

  • On a four day training course in Erdington, just outside Birmingham. Stay in the city and travel out, or stay near the course venue? Is Birmingham worth it?

  • Is Birmingham worth it?

    No.

  • Don't stay in Erdington. there are nice places in Brum though, get a hotel in the Jewellery Quarter, take your bike to ride to work. come play polo. etc.

  • He's trying to avoid the ambiguity by focussing on an arbitrary visible difference which isn't actually restricted to people in that bit between Siberia and Fiji...

Hard to recommend a less stupid, less generalistic term without knowing what sensible context it's to be used in.

    Get me, I'm european.

I like to write. Mainly in Dutch, but at times in English as well. Sometimes I just wonder about words I don't know in different languages, without (yet) having a context in which I would use them. All this commotion about racism and such wasn't called for.
Some might argue that me looking for a differentiating word for a visual aspect of a species of people is an act of racism. However, I'm trying to avoid any pejorative offence in my possible future writing.

On suggestion of Landslide I decided for almond shaped eyes. Thanks for that. Case closed.

  • My dentist put me down as "White Irish" yesterday
I just sat there, trying not to dribble.

So he was a good judge of character then?

Belarus translates to white russia, and its people, belarusians to white rusians. but white rusians also refers to people who fled the revolution.

it is a source of confusion here. is there a link between the two?

students of rusian history please welcome to enlighten.

No, the "Whites" and "Reds" were just flags* for the respective combatants in the revolutionary war. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus#Etymology for an explanation of why "The last dictatorship in Europe" is called White Russia

*Not literal flags, but identifying nomenclature named after colours.

  • interesting -thanks. so much of european history that is totally unknown to me.

    The Dude abides.

  • The Dude abides.

    Great quote from Tron!

  • Sorry to derail from the Russian history, of which I am a particular fan I must add, but I have a sort of bike fit issue, and we all know the internet is the best place for that...
Basically, I want someone with any physio knowledge to let me know why the change in my upper body position when riding in the drops, compared to the hoods/tops, causes my legs to feel weaker, and for lactic to build up in my thighs considerably more quickly? I understand that, aerobically speaking, riding in a more tucked position might restrict lung capacity/diaphragm movement, but I just can't twig why it makes such a profound difference to my perceived leg strength?

  • Because your back body is further stretched when in the drops than on the hoods, and you probably lack flexibility in your hamstrings glites and lower back.

  • Interesting, cheers James. I wouldn't have thought a couple extra inches could make such a difference, but I guess riding on the tops/with flats or risers for the majority of the time has caused any flexibility that I once had to atrophy somewhat! Any good stretches you'd recommend?

  • That's what she said.

  • Hmmm, kind of set myself up for that one...

  • Go to a decent yoga class.

Uttanasana, padagustassana, supta padagustassana, parsvotanassana, paschimottanassana

  • Nice one, cheers.

  • ^^ that sounds delicious

  • Best places for dim sum in Central London?

  • Dumpling Legend has been pretty good the few times I've been there. Favourite place I've been to in London so far has been floating Lotus in Canary Wharf.

If you do go to Dumpling Legend, try the soup dumplings.

  • cor I would kill for some dumplings right now.

My asian posse and I rate http://www.pearlliang.co.uk/london/restaurant/index.asp but was like 5 blocks from my old home. Not too expensive too I thought for the amount we smashed back.

This is good too http://www.phoenixpalace.co.uk/ - perhaps not the "best".

  • Love both of the Places Mands!

  • Best places for dim sum in Central London?
