It wasn't actually called a "ridgeback" as such.....
The freewheel (Madison) catalogue in the 80's sold road bikes under the name "Rapide" and touring bikes under the name "Romany" as well as the Ridgeback mtb range. Apparently the road bikes were made by Revell of London (possibly sourced from Dave Yates and Mercian)
Later on, the Rapide and Romany brands became model names in the Ridgeback range and it all went downhill from there....
