Thing is, you can get used to the gear you're stuck with (like a fixed wheel bicycle), so a standard 50/34 would be fine, she also have a classic 52/39 on her road bike yet still managed pretty well, faster than me though.
Another choice is an MTB double crankset with a bigger ring.
We had a Middleburn rep came into work with their crankset similar to the White Industries, they have an example with 46/30.
Other choice is the Velo Orange, however covering a triple would work, my girlfriend have 46/30 but the big ring is a chainguard;
