  • "Welcome to the Steam In-Home Streaming Beta"

    Sweet

Didn't get much chance to mess with it last night. It took bloody ages to get my PS3 pad working on the laptop.

The streaming setup is really simple tho'. Just launched big picture mode on the laptop and the games installed on my main PC were all available.

Gaming experience isn't quite there yet though. Image quality is fantastic but there was a significant amount of lag, enough to make playing something relatively leisurely like Tomb Raider kind of uncomfortable. I'm running this over powerline ethernet adapters, which claim they're doing ~170Mbit, however the steam diagnostics said this was more like 15. It also said latency was ~125ms of which over 100ms was 'display', which presumably includes the streaming. Weirdly it said ping was 20ms, which seems high considering I get half that with speedtest.

Seems very promising though. Gonna see if I can blag a long ethernet cable from work and test it with that instead of the powerline things. If it's significantly better I'll have to start thinking about ripping half my house to pieces to install one permanently.
