Does an alluminium frame need an alluminium BB?

A word of warning to anyone considering the Token TK867 111mm ISO BB as a cheaper alternative to a Campag Centaur 111mm ISO BB with Sugino 75s: Don't buy it, It's not a proper ISO taper and puts the chainline about 4mm out.

What BB do I need with da 7600s to give a 44mm chain line?
-
• #630
welcome to the world of paul components' shit 44mm chainline indra, your best bet is a campagnolo 111mm of some sort, then chainline's only out by 1mm, you can use chainring bolt spacers to to get a 0.2mm chainline hit but that'd make the chainring "spill over" and look shit for the sake of 0.8mm which is nothing

112mm JIS?
-
• #632
Actually I need to check, I think I've got a 113mm in there right now.
-
• #633
jis? after months of searching the best i came up with was an old phil wood 113mm iso (what best case scenario you'd get) that turned out to be assymetrical, so useless

What is the Wipperman Connex of 24 mm bottom brackets? In other words what 24 mm bb cups should I buy to fit my new Rotor 3D cranks on to a BSA cx frame? I am thinking about Shimano Ultegra at around 20 euros.. Any options out there for lightweight, cheap and longlasting cups?
I have previously ridden Campy tranmissions and SRAM on my cxbike but find Campy record bb cups lasting not long enough... -

Exactly the same problem with a Tifosi Bottom Bracket. It is supposed to be compatible with Campagnolo (ISO) but its not at all. I believe that Tifosi BB are just Token BB with a different name. Clearly not ISO, take care.

I have Dura Arse 7400 cranks that Sheldon says have a 46mm outer chainring chainline. Google says that's with a 113mm BB.
So if I want these to work with a 42mm rear chainline I need a 105mm BB, yes?
Have I got that right?
What's a decent road use BB in about that size, with half an eye on weight? Shimano's ones like the UN55 seem worryingly cheap.
-
• #637
Correct
UN55's are good, they're sealed and designed to last but not the smoothest and once they're gone they're gone, I've got a 107mm Tange ln3922 I need to sell if you want, meant to be a bit better than the un55's, not that most people can tell
-
• #638
Thanks. I'm going to go with the 107mm UN55 for now and see how it feels.
I guess after that I'm talking Royce or Phil or similar.

Suitable BB suggesions for nago (italian thread) with sugino super mighty.
-
• #640
According to Velobase, the super mighty has ISO square taper. I had some troubles to find a cheap ISO bottom bracket with ITA thread (don't try the ISO "compatible") , so I'd recommand to go for a Campagnolo one to avoid any problems. You can still set a JIS BB but you'll get the same than umop3pisdn.

Are your Sugino Mighty's the track or double version? Both are ISO and the track version gets a 42mm chain line with a 102mm Campy BB no problems. Can't remember what BB I'm running on my converted set though... -

Hey there,
I have a quick question about my chain line.
I am planning to buy Phil Wood hubs in 130mm spacing with a ⅛ cog. Does anyone know the chain line of these hubs? And what bottom bracket axle length do I need to get the same chain line with Campagnolo Record Pista cranks?
Thanks :) Any help is very much appreciated!
-
• #644
All standard, take a look at this pdf on page 6, there is all there track hubs https://www.philwood.com/philpdfs/wheelbuilding_break.pdf you'll see that the hub centre to flange stays the same across all axle lengths, basically phil make one hub shell and change the axle, spacers and bolts to suit the spacing be it 110, 120, 126 etc. so it should be standard 42mm chainline
to get that with the record pista cranks you need a 111mm iso bb, campagnolo centuar's are a good, cheap (relative to hubs and crankset cost) , reliable option

Great! Thanks so much sirbikealot!!
The Centaur bb is not available in silver anymore, right? I think I'll find something else then. Is the Veloce bb ok as well? The only other option I found was Tifosi, but I read here that many people have problems with them.

Noticed I have some lateral play in my cranks/bb area, I'm running omniums with gxp bb. I've been using them daily for about a year now.
Reckon my bb is fucked? Or can it be something else.
-
• #647
GXP BBs are not known for their longevity. It's probably that.
-
• #648
Yeah did a bit of Googling, it's seems they need replacing fairly often. I guess it's a good thing they're pretty cheap.

I want to use a set of njs cranks so require a 109mm iso bottom bracket, i don't currently have one, will a 107mm jis work to give the same chainline?
do i remember rightly that it's ISO cranks that can be put on JIS tapers?

Anyone any idea on bb size/length to get a 42mm chainline using a T.A. pro 5 viz crankset? These:

Having a bugger of a time finding out -standard 68mm bottom bracket shell.
Thanks,
