We can be as many abreast as we like in an advanced stop box. There is no guidance in the highway code on that. The WHOLE space is marked with a cycle symbol. It is ALL there for cyclists. The driver was clearly getting irked by cyclists getting ahead of him.
Having a word at the lights might have been a bit over the top, but is legal. Getting out and lumping someone is a serious offence though.
