Look at the number of top players who used to play on janky shit bikes, the gain if anything IMO is marginal. Fuck trends, just bloody play FFS!
Case in point: 26" > 700c. Theoretically maybe, but based on the past year's results in both the World's and Euros and quite a few better players now back on 700c - Rupert, Josh, Luca, Emmet, Hayden (albeit he was on 650c previously), IMO the player makes more difference than what they are playing on.

Get a bike, tweak it to suit you game and play lots on it, tweak it again, play lots again, tweak it, then choose the best setup which suits your game. Same goes with mallet length, try different lengths, choose the one which suits you best.
We are different players, different style of play, different height etc. Here's two examples: Seb's playing with 110mm mallet, he's playing well, does it mean if you do the same you'll also be brilliant? Rupert is playing on a Dolan with stock cyclo-cross forks and doing well, again, doesn't mean that anyone else would too.
