The 808 and 909 sample kits bundled with Logic (in the EXS sampler) are actually pretty good and I use them a lot. They come set up in the channel strip with compression and stuff on, but they're maybe still a bit clean out of the box. If you strip the effects back and set your own compression and sometimes a bit of overdrive on them they can sound great (though I still tend to layer a heavy bass drum underneath, e.g. I have some killer Juno 106 bass drum samples, or the DrumSpillage/MiniSpillage bass drum).
The one big benefit that samples have over the original hardware is that you can tune the drums (particularly the bass drum) to match the key you're working in.
