6 months? Really? What for? 5 years is young ish I think. If they were like 10+ then it might not be a good idea.
Whatever you do, please try to avoid sending them to a cat home like battersea. Nothing wrong with them but just that you will never know where you cats end up. If you gave them to someone you know and think is good person, at least you could get updates or something, and you know they will be looked after...
