Alfine (FC-S500) is indeed "Tester Approved" but you won't be able to use the chainguard and a Hope SS hub, as the chainlines won't line up. If using a 9/10-speed cassette hub it will be fine, or you can move the ring to the outside and bin the chainguard. If you do get the Alfine cranks, get the 45T, firstly because big rings give a smoother and more durable drive, and secondly because the 45T chaingaurd will probably be easier to sell to a crosser building a 1x10 bike :-)
