I can't do gears, I'm incapeable. lots of coasting, crunching noises and looking down at the derailer wondering how the hell I get it to work how its supposed to.

Me neither but I'm sure I'd get used to it.

1. Get the shifting set up right. Read the manual, or a bike maintenance book.

2. When you shift, ease off the power a touch as the shift goes through.

3. Don't shift when you're out of the saddle.

4. Ride more / further / faster / more comfortably.
