I’m very pleased you’re thinking of going ahead without me. It’s now entirely up to you to decide how you want to arrange things, but here’s some information and a couple of suggestions.
The HD in J has never been on a Sunday in the past – that was because I didn’t want to conflict with clubruns. The original 1959 ride was on a Sunday, but that was a West Twickenham RC club run.
It has never started from Hampton Court. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t, except that if you’re going to Berinsfield it would put about 20 miles onto the day’s total. If you want a similar ride to recent years, I suggest as a meeting point ‘The Orchard Café’ 776, Staines Road, Feltham (01784 258795), although this is **not **open on Sundays. Unfortunately it's on the main A30 road, but it’s a very quick ride into Staines and from there you can use last year’s route.
The Swan Hotel at Staines has proved a good finishing point in the past. For various reasons I don’t want to suggest using the Sailing Club, and in any case I don’t think it’s really necessary.
Naturally, these are only suggestions.
When you have decided on a date, if you like, I’ll see if Paul Holdsworth or any other HDW members want to join you (there won’t be many).
Last month, quite by chance, I met one of my companions from that 1959 ride. I don’t think I’ve seen him since about 1961. He’s a bit older than me and not 100% fit, but he still retains a strong interest in the bike game. If the ride comes off I may wheel him out to meet you at the finish.
