    It's not pious groupthink, it's reasonably simple physics; the maximal deceleration acheivable by the most skilled operator on a brakeless fixed bike is about half what can be acheived by a moderately competent cyclist with a front brake functioning to the modest standard laid down by regulation. Since stopping distance is inversely proportional to deceleration, that means an average nodder can stop from a given speed in half the distance required by a reckless idiot.
