Looking at the brands you mention but cant seem to find any. Am I overlooking things?
As 29" wheels are the same diameter (but with wider rims) as 28" (622/700c) all of the mentioned brands have frames that take 29er wheels.
The Salsa Vaya i just built takes 29er wheels, but max 45mm tyre size.
The Salsa Fargo i think takes 29er wheels with up to 54mm tyres (2.2")
Also the Specialized AWOL can fit quite wide tyres.

Yes, 29" is 700c.

So it's all a lie?
-
• #2132
No. Wheel size ≠ rim size. Wheel size takes in an approximation of the tyres used.
-
• #2133
So in fact any frame that takes bigger tires could be stamped as ''29'' compatible frame''?
Then theres no use for me as I don't do wide tires. Oh well
-
• #2134
No. The term 29" is a mtb thing (tyres 2" plus in width, or thereabouts). Touring and cyclocross bikes sit somewhere in between as they can take 29er wheels often, but not usually 29er tyres.

Found a better chart to confused Machine with;

That bike's got three wheels...

Thanks for clarifying this for me guys.
So my ultimate touring setup would be Mike Hall-alike. 32h slightly deep carbon rims on mtb hubs with cable disc breaks. And of course carbon frame, which served me well before. Not sure if your second chart is ''better'' ed, as the first actually shows wheel diameter and the second one assumes a certain tire wide/deepness.

Just get an MTB wheelset instead, they're pretty light already as it is, mid-range 29ers wheelset weight around 1500g.
My ZTR Crest/Hope come out at 1,750g.

The colour on the outside of the rims is the width with different tyres - the MTB one is 736mm which come out to 29", hence the name.

Now I get it :)
I'm talking about my ''ultimate'' setup though, which aint anything I will have (money for) any time soon.

Hammocks arent made for european conditions i guess...
Hammocks don't work too well with sleeping bags in colder conditions, because you crush the lower insulation. Instead you would use an insulated underliner which goes under the hammock and an insulated blanket over the top - sort of like a giant sleeping bag which covers you and the hammock. They pack down quite small but...

At least you get a free t-shirt for that price...

any opinion on the topeak bikamper

Heavy, expensive and required removal of wheel every time, also cannot be pitch without a wheel (AFAIK).

So, I need to make a final decision about a frame for my new light touring/bikepacking/winter bike
Steel
Has to have 700c wheels, 35c tyres or bigger
Disc brakes
53cm effective toptube or close (54 at a push)
decent length headtube, so compact geometry, sorry Surly!Got it down to:
any other ideas?

Salsa Vaya is another option.
-
• #2148
26'' only in my size, I think the 54 would be pushing it
what do you think about the 70degree head angle on the fairdale? seems super slack, how will that affect handling?
-
• #2149
Depends on your riding style. I prefer a slightly racy geometry for I tend to ride the drops a lot. Do you plan using bar bag?

Croix de Fer really is a beauty... Have you checked out PX's On One CX bike or if the geometry suits better the PX XLS CX bike. They are a tad bit more expensive, but carbon comes with much comfort and lightness, which you want in the long run.
^^ Sorry I thought that clamp ons would do the trick, apparently they're useless.
