I have one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000HJPK2C Used it for football a few times and worked well. The image stabilisation helps a bit for tracking when it kicks in and autofocus is of a decent speed. Ken Rockwell seems to like this one too http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70-300-vr.htm
