Very little happens at Heathrow after 11PM due to noise restrictions, and one runway is usually closed for maintenance/supersonic fixeh riding/whatevs. Gatwick is a different story, it can be busy well into the wee hours of the morning.
The northern runway at Heathrow is 3992m long, so it's not far off. It's still the longest runway in the UK, and a lot longer than Bruntingthorpe's (3000m).
