  • Gave my fixie a complete service last night and though 'It's ttime to remove that front brake, I havn't used it at all for the past few rides so I should be fine!'.

Well, I'm flying down the hill on my way back from town and this happens...

Cracked my lock ring mid braking. Needless to say the result was not pretty but not much damage was done to me, the bike or the 4x4 I went into.

I have fitted a identical spare I have but my question is this: Are all lockrings one standard size? And what is a really good brand or specific lockring to buy as I don't really trust the one I have on there now.

    Supa

  • System ex ones are pretty beefy

  • Lockrings come in 2 sizes (actually 3 but you can ignore the 3rd)

  • Why the fuck did you think it'd be a good idea to remove the brake?

There is a reason 2 brakes are a legal requirement, in case one fails.

  • Because I prefer the cleaner look of no brakes. And once I get my lock ring problem sorted it will be removed again.

A bell is also a legal requirement but I seriously fucking doubt you got one of them on your bars, but if you do, you can fuck off and ring it. :)

    Thanks for the help, dancer.

  • A bell isn't a legal requirement
    A pair of brakes is
I would have thought that having a locking fail and crashing as a result would be a wake up call.
As it isn't I will nominate you for a Darwin award.

  • I prefer the cleaner look of no teeth

  • Like raaaaaiiiin.

So much wrong in one post, were you classified as supa needs at school?

  • oh no you di'nt.
snaps fingers moving head from side to side

  • seriously, it sounds like you don't know what you're doing. put a brake on.

  • This is London Fixed Gear and Single Speed forums, right? A forum for fixie riders and bikes?

I know exactly what I'm doing, I just had a mechanical failure and asked for some advice on what the best course of action to prevent it happening again.

But apparently I get a bunch of 'men' whinning like fucking wives about how I legally need this and should have done that who get rather bitchy when they get the same kind of attitude in return.

Thank you to yoav and jackbepablo for actually trying to help rather than being a condescending arsehole. I am truly curious if you act this way when you do rides or meets or races? I'm going to assume you don't since getting a punch in the face may seen a little annoying after a while.

Oh, and happy new year to you all, Supa.

  • what happens when the next lockring breaks?

  • DA lock ring.

  • Whap happens when your forks snap? Or your down tube weld cracks? Or your handlebars bend? All possible, just unlikely. A decent lock ring, properly tightened, will allow me to stop fine and will not break.

  • then buy a decent lock ring.
not one made out of cheese.

  • and "t" is nowhere near "p"

  • Maybe the lockring you had was female and that's why it broke, because it was too girly and not for men.

  • And thats what I'm trying to do 31t, I am just not sure what the best lockring out there is, thus my initial post.

  • I know exactly what I'm doing, I just had a mechanical failure and asked for some advice on what the best course of action to prevent it happening again.

Lockrings don't often just break. They're stronger than the hub threads. It's quite likely you didn't have the correct lockring, you had it too loose allowing the cog to smack into it when you tried to remodel the neighbour's 4x4 or you installed it incorrectly - perhaps cross-threaded or using a screwdriver to tighten it which could weaken the ring.

Best course of action is a DA lockring and putting your brakes back on and if you want to get all internet hard man, do one >>>

  • DA lock ring.

    ahem!!!

  • The lockring came with the wheel brand new, along with a 16t sprocket and was already fitted. And I tightened it on with a park tool lockring too, no hammer and screwdriver. I'm assuming I just had a dodgy one with an internal crack since it broke along a notch point.

I will get myself a DuraAce Lockring if they are the best out there but the brakes are staying off. And it's not a internet hard man routine, I was just pointing out of some arseholes have a attitude online that do not reflect what they are like face to face.

    Thanks, Supa.

  • Oh don't worry, quite a lot of us are arseholes in the real world. This isn't the friendliest internet forum for nothing ya know.
