I saw it when it came out as well and I really liked it. I didn't feel that was because it was worthy, although I do think the exoticism played a part. Surely that is a huge part of why cinema is enjoyable though? The whole way it is filmed is completely immersive, and being immersed in a way of life which is completely different from your own can be a powerful experience. It was a good plot anyway, and brought up a lot of discussion and questions afterwards, which I think is what you want from art.
That said, I also went to see Once Upon A Time in Anatolia with my girlfriend and three friends. My girlfriend and I loved it, the others all fell asleep and thought it was horrific and long. Perhaps I am one of those pompous 'it's-foreign-so-it's-better' types.
