They just stop. There's no run down, no warning light, no emergency mode. All my other lights have some version of this feature. It's annoying and has forced me into many a shop to buy new batteries. It's also quite bulky and I prefer mount options that leave the mount on the bars and you just take the light with you. There must be better options.
