I knew I recognized that paint scheme. There's an Arcobaleno with the same scheme in the 1995 catalog.

I have the colour scheme but as MX-Leader. Its Team Gan. They had the livery in 1995-97

when they went over to white

  • Mine is a Team Alu from i guess 1997 going by the numbers stamped under the bottom bracket,

From the material and paint scheme its more likely post Y2K. I'd guess 2001 or 2002.

  • Hi, can anyone identify the team that used to ride this Merckx livery? Mainly purple and silver. Probably Dutch/Belgian. Any help appreciated. David

  • Great picture.

  • My latest find.. a late 60s/early 70s Eddy Merckx Kessels in Faema colors.

  • Being an old git, I followed Eddy Merckx's career from his first days as a pro for Peugeot. I've just read this book which served to remind me of how incredible this man was as a rider. The best ever - and I do mean ever. Read the book, I implore you.

Re Merckx frames - when he was a pro, most of his frames were built by Colnago - as many as 27 in one season. The frame on which he broke the hour record in Mexico was 200 hours in the building - by Colnago himself. When Merckx retired from racing, De Rosa helped him set up his frame factory in Belgium.

It's all in the book - read it and prepare to be blown away at the magnificence of the man and the athlete.

  • this is fantastic, any other shots of this? i have a SLX frame which is telecom colours, paint is pretty bashed up, pondering getting it resprayed, but i do love the original colourways / paint detail, will i get lynched on here for even suggesting getting it repainted?

I'd say build it with 8 speed if your going period correct, 9 speed was the aluminium era a la Ulrich & Pantani with their titanium 9 speed Record set ups in 97, 98...

  • great thanks, It was just i had a 9 spd group. I'll go with 8spd Chorus

97 was not yet Alu era. Gan still rode MXL in the blue livery... While Pantani was big on Alu and rode a series 7000 frame in 1998 these frames were not widely accepted.. a lot of forks and frames broke.. things were much worse than the teams and mechanics ever let out.. A recall a friend coming back from the Giro--- he was providing technical support to Pantani and few other riders who were riding his wheels--- with stories about all the alu/carbon death traps.. but if we are going to talk about the Alu era.. its probably from 94 or 95.. Riis rode, for example, metal matrix in '86.. still steel was still very much around.. and Ti too.. and even carbon.. until 1999.. steel went dead for Y2K and most traditional vendors to elites found it quite difficult to sell or place their frames..
