I often do the rear limit by hand before I install the cable or chain. The mech defaults to highest gear so adjust the screw so the jockey wheels line up with highest sprocket. Then push the mech over by hand to the low side and adjust the limit screw again so the jockey wheels line up with the lowest sprocket. Now connect the chain.
Now the cable, ensure the shifter is set to highest gear. Wind the barrel adjuster all the way in and back it off by one turn. Connect the cable, pulling it finger tight and then do the pinch bolt. Now check to see if the first downshift works, and if not use the barrel adjuster to tweak it.
One question, is the chain long enough? Or are the chain stays longer on the new bike?
