Tricky one, you can try the "knocking" trick, if there's an area that sounds "dull" and the rest doesn't there's definitely a problem.
I'm anal and would sand it down, then Kurust it and then put Vaseline or Waxyol on top to keep the damp out. If really anal do a peek inside but that would remove the BB.
Nail polish and Humbrol may give you a good paint match.
Opinions on this? I quite like it...but it's in Japan so a major hassle and the rust does look...not so good. Well it's been on e-bay for months...
