  • Brooklyn one's shut down now... Also... Paulie Gees/Robertas/Di Fara

  • bump!

Got my visa so im off for 2 years to NYC.

Im interested to know if prospect park has the same prospects (tee hee) as regents park for riding quickly in circles?

  • See you out there next summer

  • For reals? Exciting we can yell das at each other over a good warm beer

  • central park is good for it c.b. there's always roadies going zipping by. also there's a fair number of riders who use the cycleway that runs on the west side of manhattan at hudson.

  • I walked through prospect park at the beginning of the year and there was loads of cyclist about, looked great for cycling

  • excellent thanks to both of you, I will of course explore but any help I can get is great.

I am now on NYC Fixed Forums, does any one know any cross over forumgers?

  • hypothetical question:

If one wanted to go to NYC on a holiday visa and work doing cash in hand/'off the books' type work e.g. coffee shop/restaurant work (no hand job suggestions please), how easy is it find work like that in new york?

  • You mainly work for tips there so I suppose it might be quite easy but they also have training you have to do to be a bartender and stuff so you might struggle without that.

Be careful on your way in, they can ask you for alsorts of stuff like how your going to pay for your stay. I've been to NYC twice this year and got grilled the second time on the way in, why was I there what was I going to do and stuff, thought I maybe wouldn't get in during it.

  • was thinking of avoiding bar work because of that reason. coffee shop/restaurant work seems more my thing. anyone got any tips/experiences, would love to hear them!

You can ride right round Manhattan on the cycle way. Really good experience. Best thing though is to head over George Washington Bridge and up towards the state line. Lovely ride and you are out of the city as soon as you get over. E bridge.

this. 9W is the holy grail of cycling in new york and its the lead out path to many great bike paths like piermont, bear mountain.

prospect park loop is great for that, much better than reagents park since its a rolling hilly loop without real traffic. Get out there in the early am's for good riding and even earlier to see the races.

  • thanks guys I will keep all that in mind. I understand there is a velodrome up in queens or something too right? out door so I guess its quite similar to Herne Hill

  • any ideas where i can get (hire/buy) an old beater just for the week?
i'm heading to NYC in sept but am going to be in harlem (for free) i know i'll want to be down in L.E.S. though

  • Hi all,

So, my GF has been made an offer by a company in NYC, and we are bouncing back and forth trying to figure out if we could make this work for the both of us.

She would be able to get a fast-tracked 'O' Visa, but sadly, things would be a bit more tenuous for me ... hoping to perhaps go over on either a student visa, or failing that a J-visa/VWS while scouting for work (although this seems a bit risky and means leaving every 3 months).

Has anyone here made this leap in the past, or has any insight regarding spousal/student visas, or visa advice in general? Potential timeframes are pretty crazy, so trying to mine for as much knowledge as possible!

Oh, and I am from NZ - living in the UK on a Tier 2 sponsored visa, just to make things more complex!

  • I think you really need to speak to your embassy to get the official word on what your options are with this...

Would you consider living there permanently or is this just a long-term visit?

  • Still waiting on a reply from the NZ embassy ... thanks for the suggestion though:)

  • I'm going on Tuesday.
    Staying in downtown Manhatten.

Anyone got any recommendations for bike stuff or craft ale houses?
    Along with other cultural pursuits.

  • I'll be in NYC towards the end of February anyone know any good bike shops that i can pick up some components (omniums/zen chainrings etc) that sort of stuff.

The Pony Bar in Hell's Kitchen on 10th avenue 45th street is well worth a visit, truly vast range of craft ales from reasonably strong to silly strong. Found myself having to have a few tactical ciders to enable prolonged ale appreciation.

Diagonally opposite corner of the block on 46w St and 11 is the Landmark Tavern, 5th oldest pub in NYC, reminded me of a proper old booze. They brew their own ale and lager, one of each. Friendly landlord and barman, great food too. Highly recommended, would love to be back there.

Down in Greenwich, iirc, is another great pub: Swift Hibernean Lounge, dark wood, hugh ceilings, great selection of ales, beers, whisky. Find it on 34 east 4th, this is the pub where I found my favourite beer on draught at full bottle strength, Adnams Broadside. I was so surprised I had to keep pinching myself that I was actually drinking Broady in NYC.

Have a great time, it's an amazing place.

  • Going to nyc for 2 weeks in april , can't drink there yet so not really planning to visit bars but want to go to food places like baohaus anyone got anywhere they know of?

    What do you wanna eat?

Go to DiFara in Midwood. Ramen at Ippudo on Astor Place. Mission Chinese food in the LES. Pok Pok NY in Carrol Gardens. Eat a Shake Shack. Dosa Cart at Washington Sq. Park. Go to Xi'an Famous Foods in Flushing / East Village. Pho Bang in Flushing. Robertas in Bushwick...

It'll cost more or less the same as here but Chari and Co in the LES has more or less the best range of high end Track stuff in the city.
