  • oh sorry for the late post up

  • Ok I got beagle to send me a picture of the scores taken from our match yesterday... (He's got the book, but wasn't the score keeper, mentioning no names! :)

    So the headlines are:
    Thundershalfts 5 : Schlong Slots 24
    Ana 3
    Io 1
    Julia 1

    Louis 13
    James 7
    Jackie 4

I was a bit groggy, so I don't actually remember much of the game except Julia complaining about me hooking her mallet when she was in goal for one of Jackie's goals and James scoring an awesome goal after the ref said play on which didn't count because the ref (and us) hadn't noticed that ThunderShafts were busy getting disrobed! :)

And the lights went out in the last few seconds of the game so we just played on in the dark! :)

Ps, did ask beagle for your scores too Jono, he's not got them with him at work but says he'll post them later today.

What about Cam, he's 40 something, right?

  • And snoops too?

  • I guess Big Ed is older than Bill.

  • Badger had his 30th already didn't he?

  • how old is pique ?

  • Pique is ageless.

  • Thundershafts v Daredevils at Downs, saturday 1pm.
refs needed pretty please (throwins guaranteed afterwards)

this is now gonna be at Newington can anyone ref?

  • how old is pique ?

Judging by his hair line, reckon he pushing mid-40s.

(Also, PK is in Division I? Must be something wrong with that seeding system.)

Can't ref this game but 3 cans of beers (I usually only take 2, one for the game, one after) for 45 minutes in the cold, taking shit from players and then getting no game?

It's my personal opinion but I ref for the throw ins before or after and I would happily not take the beers if they can guarantee me 45 minutes of throw ins. Think about the refs more than anything else, yes, you just played a 45 minutes high octane game, but the ref, goal refs and score/time keeper just stood there in the cold while you guys kept warm cycling around.

  • Someone mentioned last week at Newington that in future leagues, it would be good if each league team / player will have to ref a minimum number of games over the season, it becomes part of participation, so that all games are covered and it doesnt fall on volunteering so much. I think thats a fair idea.

  • I think that's a fair idea, I'm trying to ref the number of games I'm playing in, but it's hard and I doubt I'll manage it.

But as part of a proposal I think it's unworkable... Or at least more work than anyone's willing to put in... Maybe as well as top scorer we should have top ref, two points for refing, one for goal reffing/time keeping, 4 points if you ref without goal refs.

  • You really think its unworkable? In Div B for example, there are eight teams. And there are eight games in a fixture release (two games per team).

So each team of three players, only has to ref one game in a fixture release.

I dont think that is an unreasonable request.

  • I think ive reffed 3 or 4 games this season. I didnt play throwins and that was fine. I got a couple of beers and watched some mates playing competitive polo for a while. Not a terrible thing.

After each of my games so far I have felt like doing anything other than playing throwins and wouldent expect it of other teams either

  • I echo Bens sentiments. Reffing is essentially a slightly intoxicated evening watching your best friends crashing into each other on bikes. I don't see an issue with it.

  • I think Kevin's idea is good. Each game should be assigned a third team who should ref. It would be a bit harder to meet 9 people ... but in that way there is no need of volunteers

  • Judging by his hair line, reckon he pushing mid-40s.

    lol

  • I don't think we can require people to ref in any formal way. But the norm has always been that every player should ref some games. We try to share the burden -- you ref my game and I'll ref yours.

People who do not ref are dicks.

Living in Cambridge does not absolve you from this responsibility. If anything, non-Londoners should make extra effort to get in and do their part, lest they want to be permanently known as dicks.

And let's see some Division I players reffing Division II games.

  • interesting points... i think formalising reffing may make organising games hard... it really should not be seen as a chore. Every team needs people to ref and therefore everyone who plays should make a bit of an effort to help out with other people's games - that's how it works, right? - you cannot expect not to ref or help out because that's not how communities work- everyone puts some effort in it to make it happen :-) . Obviously, i do not feel i can head ref (cos i cannot take the pressure and i don't know the rules) but i can goal ref and time keep - which i have done for both Div 1 and 2 and it was good fun. Come on, it's not such an awful thing to watch a bit of polo, be part of making it happen, and sipping a bit of beer. Anyway, since i am here, i must say i am totally happy how people have come out to ref our games - i know, because of my level, the games are not as exciting, so i am doubly greatful for the refs :-)

  • Talking of which, who's reffing the game at newt on Saturday?

Sorry Ben, I'm not going to be able to make it.

  • One thing we could do to up the peer pressure to ref would be to publicize a list of people who have reffed (and the number of times) and those who have not reffed.

I can think of a number of dicks who are very rarely, if ever, seen reffing league games. Let's see ... Let me know if you've reffed and don't belong on this list.
