Mine has a probe which you chuck out the window, then shut said window on the wire.
I think it's pretty accurate, I've checked it against another thermometer and the readings were consistent.
Being a luddite I would prefer a big, glass and mercury type affair but living in a first floor flat it would be hard to mount that at window height without attracting comment.
