  • That bike is hideous, but then, check out his mirrored cabinet in the background.

  • Sagans weekend bike?

  • So I'm thinking of getting a nuvinci hub as my sturmey archer is having serious torque issues.

How is your hub doing, particularly when you're putting the power down in bottom gear?

Also how meaty are the anti twist washers and axle? Is there a big washer to anti twist or just a token tab? The sturmey archer washers keep distintigrating due to my awesome power. I think I really need some sort of torque arm like on a rholoff but I certainly don't have the monies for one of them. The dropouts are also looking a bit knackered. Not a happy transmission.

  • For sale on tz-uk.co.uk:

Apparently the only one in the UK. £3k to you, sir.

The Nu Vinci is holding up brilliantly. Power transfer feels a touch spongy. But this is partly due to my fecked IG crankset, and partly due to the meter of slack on my ridiculus chain. The axle is solid, and twisting is resisted by some decently meaty washers. They are the black ones in the center of this pic. Its a bit fiddly to set-up the hub cabling. I'm not convinced I have 100% range. But I'll be servicing the bike over winter. So I'll dial it in then.

I can give no reason not to buy this hub, unless you want a uber solid feeling drive, and lightweight. In which case an IGH is not the answer anyway.

Think I'm alright there! Oh are there anti twist washers on both sides? If not would it be possible to put them on?

Ok so I'll go for it. Now just to decide between roller or disc brake. Disc brake will require an adaptor for the rear drop out. I'll give SJS a call and see what they suggest.

I'm also fine with the weight, and feel. Just had to mention it. There are washers on both sides.

Mine is a disc brake with a 180mm disc on it. I built the wheel myself too. No gremlins came up when building or installing the disc.

  • Brilliant, thanks again for all the advice. My gear range should be as low as 1.5 gain ratios with this hub. That is very low, almost the same effort as pushing it!

  • Pretty sure I'm using mine way out of spec. The ratio will be up thread. Thats with it under terrible load too.

My crankset has been destroyed twice, and the hub hasnt missed a beat. It still shifts going up a steep hill with both kids and luggage loaded.

  • There is now a thread for general fat chat
    https://www.lfgss.com/thread118265.html
to keep the chubby chasers from completely taking over Smallfurry's project thread

  • Late to the game i'm sure but how come you didn't just get these tires over making your own

  • I wanted to go as fat as possible mine are 4.8". Those are 3.8". I designed the frame to take Surly Bud and Lou. So might upgrade to those, and move my studs across in the future.

I also like the idea of tuning my own stud number and pattern. I have a load of extras I'm considering adding to the front tyre..

  • cool, your bike looks great i was just curious

  • Finally got my bars below saddle height.

Fat tyres, big bounce fork, and short legs made this well tricky.

    Flatforce stem to the rescue!

  • Titec bars?

  • Jones alu.

The effective stem length at the widest part of the bars is tiny. Gives great control. Yet if cruise with your hands nearer the center the steering is notably more stable. Works well.

  • I've tidied the front end and moved the front wheel back a smidge.

Really really happy with the improvement in position and handling. Feel a far less like a cruiser bike and more like a mtb. Not a huge difference in reality. But this has been playing on my mind. So it's a massive difference to me.
