Don't know about the cheaper wolverine lines, but my 1000 mile boots have been good.
Any chunky leather boot with a good wool sock in should take you through winter, no need for lining unless you're out for hours in sub zero temps.
A friend of mine has the red wing chukka in a 13 I think, looks good for being so big. He normally looks like a big old L, but with these it looks much more proportionate
